Lead Instructor: Rahma Hersi

Founder of Sakina Journeys, Sr Rahma Hersi is the Founder and Managing Director of Sakina Journeys Oy, a boutique company that organises bespoke Islamic events, Islamic retreats that build your mind, spirit and heart; ultimately moving towards tranquility and bringing purpose to our every day lives. Rahma was born and grew up in the beautiful city of Nairobi that boasts the only National Park in the world that is in the middle of the city.

Rahma began her journey of studying the Islamic sciences in Khartoum Sudan where she studied Arabic at the Mahad/Language Center at the International University of Africa. She continued her education at the International Islamic University of Islamabad and graduated with a double Bachelors; LLB in Sharia and Law; Islamic Studies. Rahma completed her Masters in Law at the Robert Mckinney School of Law, and is currently a doctoral candidate at the faculty of law, University of Eastern Finland. Rahma has studied for the past two decades with teachers from Paksitan, Egypt, Sudan, Turkey and Malaysia to mention a few. In turn she has taught classes on Fiqh, Usul fiqh/Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic History and Seerah and Islamic Ethics, Islamic finance and the Islamis Social Finance.

Lead Guide: Samia Omar

Samia is the founder of Halal Safaris Africa, an environmental and cultural conservationist focused on curating Islamic heritage tours in Africa. She is Bajuni native from Pate Island, Lamu native and has led several halal group trips to Lamu. She trained in Malaysia on Halal Tourism and in Sweden on sustainable tourism management. Her work brings together history, and culture, especially on the Swahili Coast, to create trips that go beyond travel by offering opportunities for community connections to make every journey tayyib — pure, purposeful, and impactful. She works with several community organisations that work to preserve the local heritage and promote Islamic knowledge in Lamu. With a deep love for Swahili heritage and Islamic history, she guides travellers through the hidden stories of the East African coast, from Lamu’s living traditions to Pate Island’s timeless legacy.

Itineraries

Day 1

Date : December 12, 2025

Arrival

Connect on a morning flight to Lamu. When arriving in Lamu, you will be received at the airport with a traditional dhow and sail through the Lamu Archipelago reminiscent of the historic days of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as an old port city. You will have a village tour in the afternoon to get climatised to your environment. As part of our quest to encourage responsible tourism, our main tour will include Safari Doctors office and shop, which sells local souvenirs that benefit the organization to provide free mobile medical care to remote Islands and villages in Lamu. The day climaxes with traditional Swahili coffee and snacks, sunset cruise listening to the call to the prayer of the hundreds of mosques in Lamu ringing through the mangrove channels. A magnificent opportunity to admire Allah’s creation through prayer and reflections on the beach.

Day 2

Date : December 13, 2025

Time : 9:00 am

Lamu UNESCO World Heritage Site Tour

Breakfast in the villa, then the group will tour the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Riyadha Mosque, Swahili house, and the Lamu Museum. The day will provide a chance to have the taste of Swahili food cooked usually consisting of tamarind, coconut, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, and many other spices brought by traders from Asia, Indian and the Middle East across the Indian Ocean. Guests may also stop over at shops during the tours to buys some souvenirs. The day ends with reflections and adhkar in the sand dunes of Shela

Day 3

Date : December 14, 2025

Pate Island Tour

An early rise for a full day's boat excursions to visit Pate to retrace the Islamic history of East Africa including the oldest 8th century mosque in Shanga, and seeing the village of Siyu Zheng He’s fleet, which capsized near Pate Island. Important Islamic historical sites and monuments such as the magnificent Siyu Fort, which is the only fort built by the Indigenous community. You will take a road trip tour on Pate Island to Pate and Siyu Villages to see key sites and monuments and engage with the local community including with a women's Islamic institute, Madrassatul Ikhlas. You will experience a Swahili women's cultural immersion and participate in a halaqa with the local women to encourage bonding and fellowship.

Day 4

Date : December 15, 2025

Manda Island Tour

We will take an early sunrise stroll before breakfast for morning adhkar. After breakfast we will proceed to Manda Island for a beach adhkar and halaqa session in Kitau, and a visit to Manda Maweni community. We will have a seafood beach seafood barbeque during our halaqa break. In the afternoon, we will take a boat cruise through the mangrove channels admiring Allah's beauty onto to end in a deserted historic Islamic village of Takwa. Here we will learn the 800 year old Islamic history of the town and visit it's historic mosque, that is nestled under magnificent baobab trees.

Day 5

Date : December 16, 2025

Beach Relaxation & Departure

You can opt to take an early sunrise stroll before breakfast for morning adhkar and say goodbye to the magnificence of the Indian Ocean. After breakfast you will relax on the seafront admiring the beauty of the Lamu Bay before catching your flight back home.

The cost of the trip includes: Accommodation on bed and breakfast, special welcome pack for, three island tours as listed, boat transfers from their airport, local flights to Lamu, excursions as listed in the itinerary, tour guides as listed, Islamic instructor, and taxes.

The cost of the trip excludes: International flights, insurance, visas, dining out, other excursions and meals and not mentioned, laundry, tips and other personal expenses.
